Tolanaro (Fort Dauphin), Madagascar

Commonly called Fort Dauphin, Tolanaro was an original French territory in Madagascar. Despite its occasional strong winds, Tolanaro is a great place to enjoy one of the sunniest and least humid locations on Madagascar's east coast. Visitors will find various relaxing pastimes to explore during their stay, such as lounging on soft beaches, ambling through markets, tasting unique cuisine, or venturing into the dry-forests that surround the town. Attractions around the area include expanses of colonial architecture left over the years, the Anosy Museum, Libanona beach, and Fort Flacourt. Those interested in trekking though the nearby landscape should visit the Nahampoana Reserve and the Saiadi Botanic Gardens with their varied wildlife and plantlife. A guided trip to the top of Pic Saint Louis is a must for those interested in enjoying the spectacular sight of Fort Dauphin from above.
